On Wednesday, January 23, 2019, the City of Norfolk, Virginia, sold $133,695,000 in General Obligation (G.O.) Capital Improvement Bonds on a competitive basis using Grant Street’s MuniAuction online open auction platform. Bank of America Merrill Lynch won the bonds submitting the bid with the lowest True Interest Cost (“TIC”) of 3.51%. As a result, the City’s total interest cost decreased by $4.35 million.

This financial victory can be attributed to our most recent post noting the strength of the City’s underlying credit ratings, which are Aa2, AA (positive outlook), AA from Moody’s Investors Service, Standard & Poor’s, and Fitch Ratings, respectively.

Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings (“S&P”) maintained its positive outlook and joined Fitch Ratings (“Fitch”) and Moody’s Investors Service (“Moody’s”) in affirming the strong credit rating on the City’s existing long-term ratings.

The City of Norfolk’s Office of Budget and Strategic Planning will hold a public
input session on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 6:00 PM.  The specific purpose
of the Public Input Session is to gain input from citizens on priority needs to be
funded with the city’s Fiscal Year 2020 HUD allocations.  The public input session
will be held in the City Council conference room located at the City Hall Building:
810 Union Street, 10th Floor, Norfolk, VA 23510.

The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Monday, January 21, 2019 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The closures include libraries and recreation centers.  Offices will reopen at regular business hours on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

Wards Corner Civic League is partnering with Suburban Acres Civic League for the annual Holiday Party. Last year’s party featured great conversation, good food, and wonderful entertainment by the Norfolk Public Schools Jazz Band. The festivities begin on Monday, December 10, 6:00 pm at Suburban Park Elementary. And don’t forget to bring a potluck dish to share!

NORFOLK, VA – Norfolk Mayor Kenneth C. Alexander has declared a local state of emergency.  The declaration allows the City to ask for state and federal resources and seek state and federal reimbursement if the cost of the storm reaches a certain threshold.

City crews have been preparing for the storm and have been cleaning storm drains and ditches to ease potential flooding.  In addition, extra crews are on standby throughout the weekend to respond to downed trees due to the wind and saturated ground. Please ensure curbs, gutters and ditches on your property and on your street are clear of debris. Check on your neighbor. Be sure to secure any loose items in your yard and on your street to prevent damage during the storm.  Be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours after the storm in case Norfolk experiences power and utility loss.

All City facilities and Courts will close at 5:00 p.m. today to prepare for the impact from Hurricane Florence.  The City Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue offices will close at 3:00 p.m. today.

Hampton Roads Transit will provide free bus service to Norfolk residents beginning Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

The City will open shelters for those  residents who need a safe place to ride out the storm.  Food and security are provided. Residents must bring personal items, medications, bedding, blankets and other comforts of home.  Residents who need transportation to the shelter should call the Norfolk Cares Center at (757) 664-6510.  Residents who bring pets to the pet-friendly shelters must bring food and water and are responsible for pet care while at the shelter with their animal.
