The City of Norfolk’s Department of Utilities will begin a $4.5 million improvement project in and around our neighborhood this winter. The project area (shown below) will receive new sanitary sewer and water pipes and resurfaced streets.

Planned Start of Construction: Winter 2022/2023
Anticipated End of Construction: Winter 2023/2024
Contractor: Arcadis
Access: Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction.

Norfolk’s Department of Transit is hosting an in-person Open House for the Granby Street Bike Lane project on September 22, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., at the picnic shelter behind the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (6400 Newport Avenue).

Grab some fresh goodness from the Talbot Park Farmers Market and stop by the picnic shelter to discuss the proposed Granby Street Bike Lanes with City of Norfolk representatives. This proposed project would repurpose one vehicle lane in each direction into bike lanes on Granby Street between Willow Wood Drive and Admiral Taussig Boulevard. The Commonwealth is developing its Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Plan. Coastal resilience means building coastal communities’ capability to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from hazards, such as flooding, with minimum damage to social well-being, public health, the economy, and the environment. It also means finding opportunities to maximize community benefits that support thriving coastal communities, such as protecting our fisheries and recreational areas.

The consultant team is also focusing on those areas that are underserved. They want to hear from you about flooding challenges in your community.

This is an updated notification about upcoming night work taking place as part of the Granby Street Bridge Rehabilitation project. Due to worker safety and quality control considerations for the concrete deck overlay amidst the high summer temperatures, the contractor will be working from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am Sunday through Thursday starting this week until the end of September. During these hours, drivers should anticipate one lane open southbound and one lane open northbound on the bridge. Construction noise will be mitigated to the extent possible. The City of Norfolk has a 24-hour hotline to address construction concerns at 757-664-7220, which you can contact to report a noise complaint.

This is an update regarding the project development effort for Granby Street Bike Lanes between Willow Wood Drive and Admiral Taussig Boulevard.

An updated Project Q&A Sheet has been posted to the project webpage, www.norfolk.gov/granbybike. The public input period is now open until 9 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021. Please provide your input through the Online Comment Map or Question/Comment Form.

Please help city staff gather input by spreading the word to your interested neighbors and friends!   

The next steps will be to prepare a Recommendation Memorandum for the project moving forward. The Recommendation Memorandum will be posted on the project webpage and shared with City Council this fall. The project will only proceed if City Council votes in favor of accepting the Smart Scale funding for the project this December. City staff will send updates at each stage to everyone who provides input through the Question/Comment Form.

The farmers market formerly on Hampton Blvd at Church of the Good Shepherd has relocated closer to our neighborhood. They now operate at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Talbot Park.

Join fellow citizens for the 2021 Norfolk Neighborhood Expo and U.P.L.I.F.T. Awards on Saturday, September 11^th at Lakewood Park! This year, the Norfolk Neighborhood Expo from pre-Covid years is being combined with the U.P.L.I.F.T. Awards from 2020. I have provided more information on both the Neighborhood Expo and the U.P.L.I.F.T. Awards below!

2021 Neighborhood Expo

The Expo is an annual event hosted by the Department of Neighborhood Services that celebrates communities and residents across the city. Our department focuses on engagement within Norfolk neighborhoods and aims at fostering positive relationships with residents while encouraging leadership capacity and creating and maintaining community partnerships. This year the Norfolk Neighborhood Expo will be held on Saturday, September 11th from 11 AM – 3 PM at Lakewood Park (1612 Willow Wood Drive). Because the Expo will be held outdoors, this will be a *light* rain or shine event.

Our event will focus on the positive pivots that communities are embracing after turning a corner from 2019. Telling a new story and coming together as engaged neighbors is what we are centering on. Please see the attached flyer and share with neighbors!

U.P.L.I.F.T. Awards

The 2021 U.P.L.I.F.T. (Unity, Public Service, Leadership, Innovation, Friendship & Teamwork) Awards seek to recognize those who performed an act of service that benefited their community and the residents of Norfolk during the pandemic. This includes individuals, civic leagues or community organizations, businesses, non-profits, and religious organizations – any individual or group that made a meaningful impact in the community to help others. Nominations are being accepted until August 27^th at 5:00 pm. If they meet the criteria below, they will be recognized with an U.P.L.I.F.T. Award at a presentation ceremony at the 2021 Neighborhood Expo at Lakewood Park on September 11^th.

Nomination Criteria

• Contribution or service must have UPLIFTed the community in a way that promotes Unity, Public Service, Leadership, Innovation, Friendship, or Teamwork
• Nominees must have contributed to the broader community
• Contribution or service must have taken place in Norfolk and/or benefited residents of Norfolk
• Contribution or service must have been performed anytime since September 2020
• Nominations must be made by someone other than the individual/group being nominated
• Nominees cannot be UPLIFT Award winners from 2020
• Pictures and videos are encouraged

This is a notification about upcoming night work taking place as part of the Granby Street Bridge Rehabilitation project. The contractor will be conducting bridge deck overlay work on five nights over the next month. This work is being performed at night due to the temperature-sensitive nature of the latex-modified concrete overlay material. Night work is planned between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the five dates listed below, weather permitting. During these timeframes, there will be one lane open southbound and one lane open northbound.

Planned dates for night work:

1. 8/19
2. 8/26
3. 9/2
4. 9/9
5. 9/16

In the case of a delay on one of the planned dates, the night work will be rescheduled to a weeknight the following week. For more details, please visit www.norfolk.gov/granbybridge.

Weekday hours: 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Norfolk Commissioner of the Revenue’s DMV Select, located inside City Hall, is open by appointment. DMV Select weekday hours are 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Residents should email CORPP@norfolk.gov to request an appointment using APPOINTMENT REQUEST in the subject line. Also include a brief description of the desired transaction and provide a daytime contact number. Additionally, residents can call the office at (757) 664-7884 to schedule. Please be sure to leave a message with a contact number.

DMV Select transactions are limited to vehicle titles, registrations, and license plates, permits and placards, name and address changes, transcript requests and voter registration applications. For all other transactions, visit the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles at www.dmv.virginia.gov.
