Spooky Season is here and the city’s Neighborhood Engagement team will be participating in two drive thru trunk or treat events on October 23^rd and October 24^th representing Neighborhood Services and civic leagues across the city. Military Circle Mall Event Details: 

Saturday, October 23, 2021 @ 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Grab your favorite costume and come out for a night full of thrills at our drive-thru Trunk or Treat! This family-friendly event will be fun for all ages, and include tons of sweet treats, and lots of spooky decorations. We can’t wait to see everyone there! 

Treats will be individually wrapped and handed out in accordance with all CDC COVID-19 protocols.  Those who plan to attend are asked to remain inside of their vehicle the entire time; no walk-ups will be permitted.

Drive Thru Halloween Experience:  

Sunday, October 24, 2021 @ 4:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. and 5:00p.m. to 6:00p.m.

We’re hosting a trick-or-treat drive thru experience for IKEA Family members! The event will feature multiple tent stops along a designated route in the IKEA Norfolk parking garage, where you can collect treats from your vehicle. The City of Norfolk Department of Neighborhood Services, USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia, and the Norfolk Admirals will also be onsite. Costumes are encouraged, but everyone must remain in their vehicle during the drive thru. Everyone is asked to bring a $ donation to drop off with our nonprofit partner, Moms on a Mission. Moms on a Mission will be collecting deodorant, shampoo, small umbrellas, dish soap and toothbrushes/toothpaste. The items will be given to local families transitioning from shelters into permanent housing. Registration is required. Valid only at IKEA Norfolk on 10/24/21. While supplies last.

The Virginia Redistricting Commission has started the map drawing process! As they release draft maps, the OneVirginia2021 foundation will post them at https://www.onevirginia2021foundation.org/maps. You can view and comment on all proposed maps on the Commission’s website. (Most recent drafts for House of Delegates maps are A7 and B6; for Senate are A5 and B4.) Now is the time to make your voice heard.

The Norfolk Department of Utilities has received reports of people going door-to-door and speaking to civic organizations, offering water filtration services. Residents have called Norfolk Utilities asking if these salespersons are associated with the City. They are not City employees, nor are they associated with the City of Norfolk.

If an individual visits your home, and you choose to engage, please ask to see identification. If anything seems suspicious, contact the police department.

Hampton Roads Transit plans to pursue extending The Tide light rail to the Military Circle Redevelopment Area and invites the public to a conversation on the project.

A virtual meeting and three pop-up events at local transit sites in October will give commuters a place to come and learn more about the proposed project. It is currently in the study phase.

“Light rail serving the expanding Sentara Leigh Hospital campus and the redevelopment of Military Circle would give The Tide a solid anchor on its eastern end that supports access to jobs and economic development,” said Sam Sink, Director of Transit Development for HRT.

The project kicked off in 2019 to lay the foundation for an expansion of high-capacity transit in Hampton Roads and hosted public engagement opportunities in the winter of 2020 with various stakeholders.

An analysis has shown that two high-capacity transit projects on the eastern side of Norfolk warrant further evaluation – a light rail extension to Military Circle and a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line connecting the eastern end of the light rail line to Naval Station Norfolk. As the next phase of this project, HRT recommends conducting an environmental analysis in order to advance the light rail extension. HRT further recommends advancing BRT to Naval Station Norfolk in a future phase.

Learn where the project has been, where it’s going and how you can be involved. Through an online story map, participants can view information, graphics and maps that provide updates about the study and provide feedback by answering survey questions along the way.

The public can chat with project officials and complete a paper survey by stopping by one of the various pop-up tent meetings at HRT Bus Transit Centers.

This Saturday will be a day of celebration in Denby Park. City staff and residents are installing an Aspalt Art Project on E. Little Creek Rd. and San Antonio Blvd. this Wednesday through Saturday. Come help celebrate on Saturday at 1pm. The committee is also looking for volunteers to help paint the street. The volunteer sign-up information is in images below. Please share this information with your neighbors.

Early voting in Norfolk begins today, Friday, September 17th. To vote in-person you can go to City Hall or to one of four satellite voting offices spread across the city. Check the office locations and open dates and times at the Office of Elections website.

Alternatively, you can vote by mail by requesting an absentee ballot at the Department of Elections website.

You of course still have the option to vote in-person on election day, November 2, 2021, at your normal polling place. You can lookup your polling place at the Department of Elections website.

The City of Norfolk’s Department of Utilities will begin a $4.5 million improvement project in and around our neighborhood this winter. The project area (shown below) will receive new sanitary sewer and water pipes and resurfaced streets.

Planned Start of Construction: Winter 2022/2023
Anticipated End of Construction: Winter 2023/2024
Contractor: Arcadis
Access: Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction.

Norfolk’s Department of Transit is hosting an in-person Open House for the Granby Street Bike Lane project on September 22, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., at the picnic shelter behind the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (6400 Newport Avenue).

Grab some fresh goodness from the Talbot Park Farmers Market and stop by the picnic shelter to discuss the proposed Granby Street Bike Lanes with City of Norfolk representatives. This proposed project would repurpose one vehicle lane in each direction into bike lanes on Granby Street between Willow Wood Drive and Admiral Taussig Boulevard.
